Israeli artificial-intelligence company AI21 Labs cut about 110 of its roughly 180 employees, around 60% of staff, in May 2026, abandoning its language-model sales business to pivot toward AI-agent optimization. An early developer of large language models known for its Jamba models, the company said selling models had failed to generate sufficient revenue. It plans to refocus on Maestro, a system that helps enterprises balance the quality, cost and speed of AI agents after deployment. The remaining roughly 70 employees will concentrate on research and product development. Management framed the shift as a response to rapid changes in the AI field and a path to 'accelerated growth,' citing partnership deals with companies including Nebius and Wix. AI21 was last valued at $1.4 billion in 2023.
