Layoff history
Akamai Technologies announced the elimination of approximately 250 roles on November 7, 2024, representing about 2.5% of its workforce, as the Cambridge-based company shifted investment from its declining content delivery business toward cloud computing and security. CEO Tom Leighton said the decision was made to prioritize areas with the greatest potential for future growth. The cuts were concentrated in management layers on the go-to-market side, with the company simultaneously planning to hire more field sales staff to chase untapped geographic markets. Compute revenue had grown 49% and security revenue 6% in recent quarters, while delivery revenue fell 11%. Akamai projected $40 to $45 million in annualized savings and also announced plans to cut its real estate footprint by 25 to 30 percent. The restructuring charge recognized in Q3 2024 totaled $82 million.
