Avaya cut approximately 180 employees in August 2024, a 3% workforce reduction, framing the action as a strategic restructuring rather than a traditional layoff. The company said it was simultaneously creating new positions requiring different skills, as it shifted its focus to serving Global 1500 enterprises and reduced account manager loads from as many as 80 accounts to a maximum of 10. Product lines that no longer fit the new strategy, including in-room conference cameras, were also eliminated. The timing coincided with a leadership change: CEO Alan Masarek announced his retirement, with Patrick Dennis set to take over on September 1. Industry analyst Zeus Kerravala noted that Dennis brings stronger "execution chops" and that Avaya now needs to "put up some wins" rather than continuing to discuss transformation plans.
