On October 24, 2024, Coursera announced it would cut roughly 150 employees, about 10% of its workforce, as slowing revenue growth pushed the Mountain View edtech company to reduce costs. The decision followed Q3 2024 results showing revenue of $176.1 million, up only 6% year-over-year, a sharp deceleration from earlier growth rates. Although the quarter marked a milestone, Coursera's consumer segment crossed $100 million in revenue for the first time, management said the cuts were needed to realign spending with a more cautious full-year outlook. The reduction is projected to save approximately $30 million annually. CEO Jeff Maggioncalda informed staff of the decision by email, calling it a difficult but necessary step to scale the business sustainably.
