Grail cut 350 employees in August 2024, roughly 25% of its workforce, less than two months after completing its separation from Illumina. The cancer-detection biotech said the restructuring was designed to channel remaining resources toward winning FDA approval for Galleri, its multi-cancer early detection blood test, while pulling back from other research programs including diagnostic aids and minimal residual disease testing. The commercial sales force was thinned, management layers reduced, and medical affairs teams downsized. CEO Bob Ragusa framed the move around urgency: "We have an unprecedented opportunity to establish a new standard of care by adding Galleri to existing single-cancer screenings." The company estimated $18 to $23 million in restructuring charges, primarily severance, in Q3. Cutting costs this sharply was expected to push Grail's cash runway from the second half of 2026 out to 2028.
