IBM shuttered its China research and development operation in August 2024, a move that eliminated more than 1,000 jobs across Beijing, Shanghai, Dalian, and other cities. The affected units included the IBMV division under the IBM China Development Center and IBM China Systems Center, which handled research and testing work. Employees in those groups lost access to internal systems and product group chats without prior warning on August 25. IBM confirmed the closure in a statement, saying the changes would not affect its ability to serve clients across Greater China. The company said it planned to shift focus toward private enterprises in China and select multinationals rather than the large state-owned banks and energy firms it had historically served. The closure followed IBM's January 2023 announcement of 3,900 global job cuts and broader plans to replace nearly 8,000 positions with AI.
