By July 2025, Intel's layoffs had passed 5,000 employees across California, Oregon, Arizona and Texas, with the deepest cuts near its Hillsboro, Oregon site and its Santa Clara and Folsom, California locations. The reductions were part of CEO Lip-Bu Tan's drive to make Intel 'leaner, faster and more efficient' by stripping out organizational complexity and refocusing on AI-era products, a push that came after the company reported an $18.8 billion net loss for 2024. The chipmaker also cut thousands of roles in Israel and moved to exit its automotive business.

Intel signaled in late April 2025 that it would cut more than 20% of its workforce, on the order of 20,000-plus jobs. It was the first major restructuring under new CEO Lip-Bu Tan, who had taken over that March. Executives said the goal was to strip out management layers and bureaucracy that had left the company too slow and complex. The reductions formed part of a wider cost-cutting push after Intel reported a steep loss for 2024, with leadership trying to refocus on engineering execution and its foundry and AI ambitions. The cuts continued across Intel's U.S. and overseas sites through 2025.

In an August 1, 2024 message to staff, Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger said the company would cut roughly 15,000 roles, about 15% of its workforce, with most finished by the end of that year. The plan aimed to deliver $10 billion in cost savings in 2025. Gelsinger said revenue had not grown as expected, costs were too high and margins too low, and the company had yet to fully benefit from AI. Alongside the headcount reduction, Intel suspended its stock dividend, cut planned 2024 capital expenditures by more than 20%, and offered an enhanced retirement package and a voluntary departure program. He called it one of the most consequential changes in Intel's history.
