The company had filed for insolvency in October 2024 following an unsuccessful bid to obtain a government-backed loan from Berlin. Despite raising more than $1 billion before going public via a SPAC merger in 2021, backed by investors including Tencent, Lilium could not find a buyer or new capital through the KPMG-managed asset sale process. Co-founder Patrick Nathen said in a statement: 'After 10 years and 10 months, it is a sad fact that Lilium has ceased operations.' A separate tranche of 200 workers had already been let go on December 16, before the full shutdown was confirmed.
