Layoff history
MercadoLibre laid off 116 employees across Latin America in January 2026, with 38 of the cuts falling in Brazil, the company's largest market. The reductions landed primarily on user-experience teams, especially UX writers who handled content production for the platform's product and design functions. The company said the decision was not a direct substitution of staff by automated systems, but rather a consolidation of design and content work supported by AI writing tools that remaining employees now use. Employees received notice on January 8, according to reports citing Folha de S.Paulo. The cuts came days after Ariel Szarfsztejn succeeded founder Marcos Galperin as CEO on January 1. No severance details were disclosed.
Reason: Consolidation of UX and content functions through AI integration
