Layoff history
Cash constraints forced Nikola to cut about 130 employees, roughly 15% of its workforce, in October 2024, the Phoenix-based hydrogen fuel cell truck maker's third major workforce reduction in two years. CEO Steve Girsky told staff: "To extend our runway, we are adjusting and rescaling our staffing needs," calling it "a difficult, but necessary, decision." The company requires approximately $500 million annually to operate but has struggled to generate sufficient revenue from vehicle sales, and its options for raising capital through stock sales had narrowed considerably. Girsky thanked departing employees, saying Nikola wished "those team members who helped build Nikola and wish them the best moving forward." The specific departments affected were not identified. The cuts followed reductions of 270 jobs in June 2023 and 100 in November 2022.
