Ola has 5 publicly reported layoff rounds on record between May 20, 2020 and April 29, 2024. A total of about 2,980 employees were affected across these rounds.
Layoff history
Ola cut around 180 jobs, roughly 10% of its workforce, in late April 2024 as part of a restructuring aimed at improving profitability ahead of a planned IPO. Founder Bhavish Aggarwal, who simultaneously removed CEO Hemant Bakshi after just four months in the role, said the company was "undergoing a restructuring exercise aimed at improving profitability and preparing ourselves for the next phase of growth." Ola had previously exited the UK, Australia, and New Zealand markets and cited AI and technology investments as sources of cost advantage going forward. The company, backed by SoftBank and Tiger Global, said it was "committed to supporting those impacted during this transition period" but did not specify severance terms. Aggarwal indicated he would take a more direct operational role following the leadership change.
