About one month after Meta committed $14.3 billion to Scale AI and hired away founder Alexandr Wang, the San Francisco data-labeling company cut 200 full-time employees, roughly 14% of its staff, on July 16, 2025. Another 500 global contractors were also let go. Interim CEO Jason Droege told staff in an internal memo that Scale AI had scaled its core data-labeling business too quickly, building up layers of excessive bureaucracy that made the company less able to react to market shifts. The cuts were concentrated in the data-labeling unit, while enterprise and government sales teams were earmarked for additional hiring. The restructuring reflected a broader business model shift: several major data customers reportedly ended their relationships with Scale AI after the Meta deal closed, pushing leadership to reorient toward enterprise and government work. No severance terms were disclosed publicly.
