Unacademy has 5 publicly reported layoff rounds on record between April 7, 2022 and July 2, 2024. A total of about 1,750 employees were affected across these rounds.
Layoff history
In early July 2024, Unacademy cut 250 jobs, splitting the reductions roughly evenly between its sales team (150 positions) and marketing, business, and product functions (100 positions). It was the latest in a series of rounds that had eliminated around 2,000 roles at the Bengaluru-based edtech company since mid-2022. CEO Gaurav Munjal framed the cuts as essential to reaching profitability, arguing that startups raised capital at "bloated" valuations in 2021 and that the resulting corrections were "not market correction" but "reality." The broader edtech sector had been struggling since school reopenings collapsed pandemic-era enrollment, and investor confidence took a further hit from the collapse of rival Byju's. Unacademy was last valued at $3.4 billion in a 2021 round backed by SoftBank, General Atlantic, and Peak XV. No severance details were disclosed.
