Layoff history
Wayfair cut 340 employees from its Technology division on March 7, 2025, as part of a restructuring that followed a major cloud migration. The online furniture retailer said it was simplifying operations and realigning its tech organization after completing modernization and platform upgrades. As part of the reorganization, the company shuttered its Austin Technology Development Center, consolidating staff into hubs in Seattle, Mountain View, Toronto, Boston, and Bengaluru. Wayfair estimated the move would generate $33 to $38 million in restructuring charges over the next 12 months, covering severance, benefits, and transition costs. Gradual cost savings were expected to begin in the second half of 2025 and extend into 2026. The announcement came the same week the company reported a weak Q4 2024, with adjusted EPS of negative 25 cents against a consensus of negative 2 cents, and a 4.5% drop in active customers to 21.4 million.

Wayfair announced on January 10, 2025 that it was exiting Germany entirely, a move that eliminated 730 jobs, about 3% of its global workforce. CEO Niraj Shah said the company had been unable to find a path to sustainable market share in Germany despite operating there for 15 years. The exit was effective immediately. Wayfair said it expected to offer roughly half of the affected employees the option to relocate to offices in London, Boston, or other locations where the company operates. The total cost of the exit was estimated at $102 million to $111 million, with $40 to $44 million allocated to severance, benefits, and relocation. The company planned to redirect the savings toward its U.K., Ireland, and Canada operations as well as its physical retail push. The announcement came roughly a year after Wayfair cut 1,650 corporate jobs in early 2024.
