xAI has 1 publicly reported layoff round on record (most recent September 12, 2025). A total of about 500 employees were affected across these rounds.
Layoff history
xAI laid off approximately 500 workers from its data-annotation team on September 12, 2025, eliminating about one-third of the 1,500-person group that labels and prepares training data for Grok. The company told affected employees that the cuts reflected a strategic pivot away from generalist AI tutor roles: "We no longer need most generalist AI tutor positions and your employment with xAI will conclude." In place of the eliminated roles, xAI said it planned to expand its specialist AI tutor team by tenfold, recruiting across domains including STEM, finance, medicine, and safety. No severance terms were disclosed publicly.
