Zomato has 4 publicly reported layoff rounds on record between May 15, 2020 and April 1, 2025. A total of about 1,220 employees were affected across these rounds.
Layoff history
Food delivery giant Zomato cut approximately 600 customer support employees around April 1, 2025, citing a combination of performance issues, attendance problems, and the growing automation of support functions through AI. Most of the affected workers had been hired less than a year earlier under the company's ZAAP (Zomato Associate Accelerator Program) and did not receive contract renewals. Terminations were abrupt: Slack accounts were deactivated within minutes of notification, with no warning period given. One dismissed worker said, "They are being inhumane in this scenario, no warnings, no nothing, boom Slack deactivated, account taken down within minutes." The layoffs came as Zomato faced slowing food delivery growth and intensifying quick commerce competition, with Blinkit's adjusted EBITDA loss surging 13x to INR 103 crore in Q3 FY25 and Bank of America downgrading the stock to Neutral. Affected employees received one month's salary as compensation.
Reason: AI automation of support functions, performance and attendance issues
