Amazon has 103 publicly reported layoff rounds on record between April 1, 2022 and March 4, 2026. A total of about 65,656 employees were affected across these rounds.
Layoff history
In March 2026, Amazon laid off at least 100 employees in its robotics unit, cutting white-collar roles on the team that designs robots and warehouse automation conveyances. The reductions came after a much larger January 2026 round that hit roughly 16,000 corporate workers, and after the company had halted development of its 'Blue Jay' robotic-arm project earlier in the year. Management framed the cuts as part of ongoing efficiency efforts tied to its artificial intelligence push, saying it 'regularly reviews our organizations to make sure teams are best set up to innovate and deliver for our customers.' Reporting on the round did not include severance terms or executive quotes specific to it.

Amazon announced roughly 16,000 additional corporate job cuts in late January 2026, extending reductions it had begun the previous October. Senior Vice President Beth Galetti described the move as an effort to strengthen the organization by reducing layers, increasing ownership and removing bureaucracy, framing it as the completion of earlier work rather than the start of a recurring rhythm of layoffs. Most U.S.-based employees were given about 90 days to find another internal role, and those who could not were offered severance pay, outplacement support and health benefits, with timing varying internationally. The company said it would keep hiring and investing in strategic areas it views as critical to its future.

Amazon said in late October 2025 that it would lay off about 14,000 corporate employees, around 4% of its roughly 350,000 corporate and tech staff, putting the round on track to be the largest corporate job cuts in company history. The reductions are meant to make Amazon leaner and less bureaucratic while it funds its 'biggest bets,' including generative AI, with about $118 billion committed to AI and cloud infrastructure for the year. Teams in cloud, grocery, video games, HR, sustainability, communications, ads and devices were notified early, though the cuts are expected to reach nearly every area. CEO Andy Jassy had signaled in June that AI would shrink the company's workforce over time.

Amazon cut roughly 100 employees from its Devices and Services division on May 14, 2025, the third round of reductions in that unit since 2022. Spokesperson Kristy Schmidt said the company made "the difficult decision to eliminate a small number of roles" to operate more efficiently and better align with its product roadmap. The division spans a wide portfolio including Alexa, Echo speakers, Ring doorbells, and the Zoox robotaxi project. Amazon did not specify which product lines lost headcount. The cuts are a continuation of CEO Andy Jassy's broader cost-reduction push, which has eliminated roughly 27,000 roles across the company since the start of 2022, though the pace of reductions has slowed considerably from the mass layoffs of 2022 and 2023.

In early February 2024, Amazon eliminated several hundred positions across One Medical and Amazon Pharmacy, two healthcare units the company has been building since its $3.9 billion acquisition of One Medical closed in early 2023. Amazon Health Services SVP Neil Lindsay told staff the moves were meant to realign resources and help the divisions hit their operating goals. Lindsay also apologized to employees who learned of the cuts through outside news coverage before receiving a direct notification. Affected workers were offered financial support, continued benefits, and the chance to apply for other open roles at Amazon. The company said it was not under a hiring freeze and continued recruiting in both units.

Amazon announced a further 9,000 job cuts in March 2023, on top of the roughly 18,000 it had detailed earlier in the year, bringing its recent reductions to about 27,000. CEO Andy Jassy said the additional cuts would mainly affect Amazon Web Services, the advertising business, the PXT human-resources organization and Twitch. He said the company had chosen to trim costs further given the uncertain economy while continuing to invest selectively in key long-term areas.

This was part of Amazon's January 2023 round, which the company confirmed would ultimately affect more than 18,000 employees. That total ran larger than the company had first signaled in November and stood as the biggest tech layoff of that wave. CEO Andy Jassy said the reductions fell mainly on the stores (retail) and PXT human-resources organizations, and he tied them to an uncertain economy and to Amazon's rapid hiring during the pandemic. Notifications to affected employees began in mid-to-late January.
Reason: An uncertain economy following rapid pandemic-era hiring.

Amazon began what was, to that point, the largest layoff in its history in November 2022, with reports of about 10,000 corporate and technology roles affected. The cuts concentrated in the devices and services group, including the Alexa organization, along with the retail division and human resources. CEO Andy Jassy was working to rein in costs after a pandemic-era hiring spree and against an uncertain economy. The company framed the move as part of its annual operating-plan review and signaled that reductions would continue into early 2023.
